CAT6 — The Reliable Workhorse

CAT6 is the minimum recommended standard for any new installation today. It supports Gigabit Ethernet at full 100 m runs and can handle 10 Gbps up to about 55 m — more than enough for most office and home environments. The cable is slimmer and easier to route than CAT6A, and terminates on standard RJ45 keystone jacks and patch panels.

Choose CAT6 when: you're wiring a home, small office, or retail space where 1 Gbps is the target speed and runs are under 55 m.

CAT6A — The Future-Proof Standard

CAT6A (Augmented Category 6) doubles the bandwidth to 500 MHz and guarantees 10 Gbps across the full 100 m channel. The thicker cable and tighter pair geometry eliminate alien crosstalk (AXT) — the interference between adjacent cables that degrades 10G performance in CAT6 at longer runs. Most enterprise and data-centre projects specify CAT6A as the baseline today.

Choose CAT6A when: you need 10 Gbps to the desktop or access point, runs exceed 55 m, or you're building infrastructure that needs to last 10–15 years without a re-pull.

CAT7 — Proceed With Caution

CAT7 offers 600 MHz bandwidth and always comes fully shielded (S/FTP), which sounds impressive. The catch: CAT7 is not a ratified TIA/EIA standard. It uses proprietary GG45 or TERA connectors rather than RJ45, which means it won't terminate on standard patch panels or keystone jacks. Most installers and IT managers avoid CAT7 for this reason — you're locked into non-standard infrastructure.

Choose CAT7 only when: a specific industrial or specialist application explicitly requires it and you've confirmed end-to-end connector compatibility.

What About CAT8?

CAT8 supports 25–40 Gbps at up to 30 m and is designed for short data-centre spine runs between switches and servers — not for horizontal cabling to desks or access points. If you're asking whether you need CAT8 for your office, the answer is almost certainly no.

Shielded vs Unshielded — A Quick Note

Shielding (STP/FTP/S-FTP) matters in environments with high electromagnetic interference: near power conduits, industrial machinery, or dense wireless deployments.
